Danish Informatics Network in the Agricultural Sciences
Dina is a network connecting universities, research institutions,
extension
services and industries. The purpose of Dina is to promote applications
of informatics and of information technology in the agricultural
sector.
This is done by supporting, inspiring and coordinating research,
development
and education in the area.
Dina has seven 'nodes', i.e., seven member institutions:
Dina
Aalborg located at Aalborg University.
Dina
Skejby located at The
Danish Agricultural Advisory Center.
Dina
DJF located at The Danish
Institute
of Agricultural Science.
Dina
FSL located at Danish Forest and
Landscape
Research Institute.
Dina
KVL located at The Royal
Veterinary
and Agricultural University.
Dina
DTU located at The
Technical
University of Denmark.
Dina
Risø located at Risø
National
Laboratory
Each member institution appoints one member of the board
of Dina.
A network for informatics in agricultural research, development and
education
Initiated in 1991, Dina was reorganized in 1997 as a formal
collaboration
involving three universities, three research institutions and an
advisory
service center - and the collaboration is open to new members.
Objectives and means
Dina aims at promoting all types of cooperation related to the
application
of informatics and information technology in agriculture - this term
taken
in a broad sense including veterinary medicine, food science,
agricultural
economics, forestry, landscape and environmental issues.
Informatics involves the use of mathematics, statistics and computer
science.
The three main tasks of Dina are:
-
Network cooperation
-
Research school activities
-
Research projects.
Network cooperation
To focus its activities, Dina selects a number of Research Focus Areas
for a period of some years. For each focus area there are organized
specialist
workshops, coordinating research projects, etc.
Dina organizes, in cooperation with other organizations in the area,
an annual meeting directed towards a broader audience.
Research school activities
A network within the network, Dina Research School
offers
its services to PhD students with an interest in the use of IT in
agriculture.
The head of the Research School is an agricultural scientist who -
assisted
by experts in computer science, numerical analysis and mathematical
statistics
- organizes thematic PhD workshops twice a year as well as an
international
summer school every year.
Research projects
Several research projects have been initiated through the network or in
relation to it as an important spin-off from the Dina activities. See
under Research Focus Areas.
Organization
Dina is supervised by a Board consisting
of
representatives from each member institution. The board appoints a Head
and a Deputy Head, sets up a Network Committee, decides about the
general
working strategy of Dina, and controls the budget.
Dina regulations -
in Danish.
Funding
The basic network and the research school activities are financed by
the
member institutions, supplemented by grants from the Danish National
Research
Councils; the Danish Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries; EC;
and other funding bodies.
